Female Swift Setwing, Dythemis velox

Date: June 25, 2005, Barton Creek, Austin, Tx
Filename: /images/2005/2005-06-25-Another-Unidentified-Dragonfly.jpg

About this photo:

Another hard to identify dragonfly, at least for me. Fortunately, I had help, including a "yes, that's velox," from the expert, John Abbott at UT.

This pose is called "obelisking." It is believed to be a way for the dragonfly to regulate its internal body temperature by absorbing less of the sun's rays. Linda says that it reminds her of the acrobats in Cirque du Soleil.

Here is a photo of the male Swift Setwing.
